From walker to runner with Choose How You Move

How the challenge has helped Sonal gain a more active lifestyle

As part of Leicester City Council Staff Health & Wellbeing week we contacted Sonal who read about BetterPoints via the internal staff newsletter. She has been using the BetterPoints app for over two years and works in the Risk, Emergency and Business Resilience Team.

I asked her what life was like before BetterPoints, and how active she was?

"I walked a lot to and from work.  I had very little idea of how much I was actually walking until I downloaded the BetterPoints app. It felt really good to know the distance I was walking by using this app and the benefit of accumulating points was a real bonus, and knowing I could have a treat or even donate to charity was great. But I did no other form of exercise.

Then I asked 'How has the app helped you to change your behaviour?'

At first I was a little sceptical but I did sign up and thought I would give it a go. I'm really glad I downloaded it! Being able to accumulate points with the Choose How You Move challenge was a good motivator.  It's been the catalyst to me trying other sports and activities.

It actually motivated me to walk much more and even take on other forms of exercise, like jogging which I haven’t done for over 20 years! The app is a real good motivator because it tracks the distance I run with the time it took me. I've even got some family and some team members at work to sign up too. They have also reaped the benefits and earned rewards for being more active!

Finally how has the lockdown affected your new active routine?

When the government announced the initial lockdown in March, after a few days of working from home, I thought that I can't just work at home and do no exercise. I enjoy getting outdoors and seeing people.  It took me a few days to set up a routine for exercising. I would do a workout at lunchtime and take a walk in the evenings. I was enjoying the fresh air so much that I considered starting jogging.

This didn’t happen immediately.  I carried on with workouts at home to build up my stamina. Now I'm running 30 minutes a couple of times a week, and it makes me feel so good. This has also encouraged me to take up swimming too during the 'un-lockdown.'  I can’t wait to go back to swimming when the leisure centres re-open again.

Taking on all of this has really helped my health and wellbeing, with the added benefit of rewards from BetterPoints keeps my motivated. - Sonal from Leicester

A big thanks to Sonal for sharing her journey to a more active lifestyle. We are very proud to work for a company that makes such a difference in people's lives.
