How Choose How You Move is keeping Nusrat active in lockdown
Every month we are awarding one user 25,000 BetterPoints as our 'Ditch the Car Star' in the Choose How You Move Challenge.
Our September winner is Nusrat who works at Leicester City Council. Before she joined the challenge, Nusrat wouldn’t have dreamt of making walking a new part of her morning routine.
We asked her what her life like before BetterPoints?
"I downloaded the app a year and half ago I'll be honest I was a bit of a couch potato and a very much 'on and off' runner. I'd use the car Monday to Friday and walking was something I only did at weekends. After joining a running group with work and did the Couch to 5k training programme but I very quickly lost the mojo for running when a friend stopped coming to the group."
And what helped her change her behaviour...?
"I know I needed to do something different to get active. In the early days the app motivated me to improve the time spent on my feet. I felt that I needed to make some lifestyle changes and the BetterPoints app was the best motivation as it felt good to be rewarded for making healthy choices.
Once I started using the app I began walking to work every day- there and back, and this became a new habit. Very quickly the benefits were very apparent; I got some me time, I arrived at work with a clear mind, feeling fresh and felt much better in myself. So I would continue this habit I invested in a good pair of trainers and with consistency I noticed my body became more toned and I felt healthier in every way."
Finally how has the lockdown affected your new routine?
"The Covid lockdown hit me really hard, it took me ages to get my head around the concept of having to work from home for such a long period of time. My boss said to me 'Do what you need to do to get into a good routine'. So, for my mental wellbeing I decided to up my game and add a lunchtime walk in as well to get me out of the house. I do 45 mins without fail every lunchtime.
I needed to log off, I could I feel myself getting more and more down as the days went on. App gave me that extra motivation to clock some points up as I get out in nature. The parks in Leicester are great. I have one 5 minutes from my house and I make full use it.
Not only that that, it's encouraged me to rekindle my running mojo in the last 3 weeks.
Me and my friend check our Choose How You Move points each week and compete against each other, compare points and motivate each other. We also like feedback the app gives us looking at dashboard and our results. Thanks BetterPoints and Leicester County council for funding the rewards it really does make a difference." - Nusrat
Congratulations Nusrat and well done for making those changes to get out and be more active.
If you've enjoyed walking and cycling more during lockdown, then don't slip back into old habits. Tell us how you're coming back to work, but better, by ditching your car and commuting on foot or by bike. Visit your activities tab in your app and complete our ‘Ditch the Car Star’ survey.
If you're still working from home, tell us about how you're keeping active by using the car less for short leisure and shopping journeys, or how you're gearing up to try cycling or walking to work when you do return.
You can submit an entry each month, so look out for messages in the app to remind you to tell us your story.
Be chosen as our monthly Ditch-the-Car star and win 25,000 BetterPoints. Just tell us how the challenge is helping you to get back to better.
